Play is so important to child development that it has been recognized by the United Nations as a right of every child. The Academy of Pediatrics reports that play allows children to develop their imagination and literacy skills, as well as physical coordination and strength. It improves children’s social skills—helping them learn to share and resolve conflicts.
Yet despite the abundant evidence, the space, time and resources for play have diminished.
You’ve likely seen this in your own neighborhood—active play among children has plummeted by 50% over the last 40 years, and an average of four and a half hours a day is spent in front of a screen. The world of play and wonder is shrinking for children and families in modern culture.
That’s why places like Fairytale Town are so important to children, families, and communities.
Since we opened our gates in August 1959, Fairytale Town’s mission has been to promote the imagination, creativity and education of children through play. Fairytale Town is uniquely qualified to do this—not just because our programming ties play to early literacy, or because of the 250,000 guests we serve each year from all walks of life—but because Fairytale Town is magical!
From the moment you walk under Humpty Dumpty’s miniature bridge, you’ve entered a place where your imagination ignites!
Children run, explore and climb playsets that bring classic fairytales to life. It’s where, as a parent, you share the tale of Jack defeating the giant—just as your little one conquers their fear of going down that tall slide for the first time.
