Costume Inspiration & Resources

A Midsummer Night’s Dream & Crystal Ice Cream Fantasy will be here soon on June 9! Costumes for the whole family are encouraged, so the Fairytale Town team has gathered some fun costume tips and resources to help you find the perfect costume:

Make Your Own Fairy Wings. Instructions and images by Simplicity Creative Group.

First tip: a little goes a long way! Accessories are an easy way to add some magic to your outfit, and can be worn with or without a full costume. For men, how about donning a Renaissance-style hat? And here is a how-to guide on making wings for you or your little one using wire (a coat hanger should work well) and pantyhose. There is plenty of room for creative expression through shape, color, embellishments and more!

Second tip: try thrifting! Visit your favorite thrift store and search for items that can be transformed into a costume. Formals and prom dresses could turn into spectacular fairy costumes! Some thrift stores may even have costumes for sale.

Third tip: if you’re feeling especially crafty, make your own costume! A number of sewing patterns are available for toddlers, youth and adults. Here are some of our favorites: a simple fairy costume for toddlers, a Renaissance style shirt for men, women and teens, and a fairy costume for women.

Fourth tip: check out a local costume shop! Below is a list of local and regional costume shops that carry Renaissance, Shakespearean and Fairy costumes either for rent or for sale. See each listing for more details.
